I get asked all the time why I remodel. Some people I know can’t understand why I’d spend my free time doing something that I could afford to pay for someone else to do. I do spend a good amount of time doing home improvement. I’ll tackle most any project. The size of the project only affects how long it takes me to get it done.
I like the accomplishment that I feel when I can see what I’ve done. There’s something special about working on a roof and being able to do just a bit and see a major difference.
I also feel like it gets done much better when I do it myself. To many times, I’ve run accross remodel work that was done by professionals and when I look at it or have to work with it, I find the work was done to the minimum standard. At samoan there was a project that I did to move a natural gas line from inside the garage to underground along the garage until it was far enough back to hit the house.
Long story short, whoever had done the original work hadn’t properly cleaned the pipes after they threaded them, had ran the pipe over the electrical box cover, and had ran it inside the house of among all the other problems. I trust trades people and know that many of them are good hard workers. I generally stay with them when they are working just to watch it all be done and learn what I can.
One of the other main reasons that I like doing my own work is that I have a job that isn’t physically demanding. At the end of the day, I’m not feeling totally worn out and needing to recover. Doing my own house projects burns me out and keeps me thinking. Every project is different and the challenges force me to keep my mind growing and expanding.
